Participants were also very vocal in their _expression_s of concern about issues surrounding the earned income and enterprise activities of their organisations, that is, between non-profit and for-profit activities in hybrid social economy organisations.

The idea of "profit" was explored for organisations with both mission-driven and for-profit intent; and how profit can be legitimately distributed (legally and morally) in a values-driven social economy program. The practice of full-cost recovery and the charging of fees within the sector for those who could pay was contrasted with the value proposition that the community should pay for those who could not meet these fees. It was also noted that in general full-cost recovery was not pursued in the sector and this reflected an undervaluing or devaluing of services.

In many organisations moving toward the status of becoming a social enterprise, management's more commercial approach to income generation often conflicted with workers' (especially volunteers') resistance to charging any fees. The value positions of each was explored with the general conclusion that many members of the Social Economy tended to lack an understanding of the need for rigorous business practices supported by appropriate infrastructure.

The intensity of this discussion was softened only by a review of the commercial and social benefits of corporate sponsorship.
